Need help getting library books/audio books?

Print PDF

The Home Library Service is for people who find it difficult to get to their nearest library due to ill health, disability or caring responsibilities. We can usually arrange for one of our local volunteers to visit to exchange library materials on a monthly basis.  We appreciate that often the social contact with a volunteer is as important as the library items they choose and deliver. This service is free and available in all Hampshire County Council libraries, including Alton library. There are no charges to hire audio books, and no overdue charges for late returns. All our volunteers are DBS (CRB) checked and comply with instructions and standards as set out by library staff.

South East Water have notified Alton residents that there will be a new water main install starting on the 23rd of January 2017 and continuing for around a year.
The works result in a number of road closures and delays due to the traffic schemes they are implementing.

Information on the works and expected dates for the stages can be found on the South East Water web site. The map of the works can be found here

A consultation for local residents and businesses is taking place on the 5th of January between 5pm-7pm at the Butts Primary School, Bolle Road.

The contractor is Clancy Docwra, their Customer Technical Centre is on 0333 000 1100, this number can be used to raise all questions and concerns, additionally, the on-site staff may be directly consulted.

The next chapter

For the last 10 years the Village Magazine has paid for the Chawton.Info Village web-site which has been managed and run for the benefit of the Village.

The magazine contributes to good causes in both Chawton and Farringdon, including paying in full for the local web-sites, and tries to be even-handed. However the contribution to Chawton.Info is by far the largest annual grant; this can be justified on the grounds that advertisers get a benefit from appearing on the site and it provides value to the local community.

The aim of Chawton.info has always been to provide a free to use central information resource for the Village for residents and visitors alike by providing both present day and historical information. Only commercial entities pay via their advertising to the magazine.

The software behind the web site is now no longer maintained, therefore it needs upgrading to improve functionality and security; however the Magazine cannot afford to increase its contribution, although it is happy to continue the funding at the current level.

The new Chawton Parish Council (CPC) expressed a desire to develop their own site exclusively for CPC activities which will incur start up and on-going costs, and which the magazine could not support financially as advertisements would not be allowed.

Funding

Chawton.info is run for the benefit of residents and visitors. Our aim is to provide information that is relevant to the residents of Chawton today and to provide information on our proud heritage.

We have been running since 2006 and receive some of our funding from the Chawton and Farringdon Village magazine, in return we provide advertising for the local businesses who advertise in the Village magazine. However, since Chawton is a small Village and the web site is not related to any of the historic attractions, it receives no other funding, hence there is a shortfall in funding each year.

We make up the difference via PayPal donations. You don't need to have a PayPal account to donate to us, since PayPal accepts all major credit and debit cards. To simplify donations, we have provided several suggested amounts on the buttons below. You may of course donate any other amount, or just use the web site for free. Our simple dilemma is that if we cannot cover our costs each year, then we can't provide this service to you.

Please note that PayPal charges us varying amounts, which it takes from the amount you donate. Their charges to us are around 4% + 20 pence (£0.20), plus a currency conversion charge of 2.5% above the exchange rate if you are not paying in sterling (GBP). For this reason, donations of less than £5 do not result in a real funds reaching Chawton.info.

To donate £10 (GBP), which is around $12 (USD) or €11 (EUR), please use this button

To donate £20, (GBP), which is around $24 (USD) or €22 (EUR) , please use this button

To donate any other amount, please use this button

Thank you for your support.
